This is an important question that affects each one of us. At what point are we saved? Or more importantly, what does the Bible say about our salvation? Let’s look at some scripture on the subject. Remember it is vitally important to know exactly what God has to say. Peter said “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God...” (1 Peter 4:11).
The Scriptures Speak of Many Things as Having a Part in Our Salvation:
- God (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
- Jesus (John 12:47; Matthew 18:11).
- Blood (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 1:18-19).
- The Gospel (Romans 1:16; 1 Timothy 4:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2).
- Obedience (Hebrews 5:8-9).
- Faith (John 3:16; Acts 16:31).
- Grace (Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 2:11, 3:3-8).
- Baptism (Mark 16:15-16; 1 Peter 3:21).
- Hope (Romans 8:24).
- A Faithful Obedient Life (Matthew 10:22; Revelation 2:10
Though the Scriptures say that we are saved by all of these things, they do not teach that we are saved by any of them alone. The Bible does not teach that man is saved by any one thing “only.”
To Be Saved We Are Expected and Required to Do All of Christ's Commandments
- Matthew 28:18-20.
- Matthew 7:21-29.
- John 12:48.
- Hebrews 5:8-9.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10.
The New Testament Relates of People Who Believed but Who Were not Saved, Because They Would not Obey the Lord:
- The Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:16-22).
- The chief rulers (John 12:42-43).
- Pharisees and Lawyers (Luke 7:28-30).
- Devils (James 2:19).
- The Lord Teaches that We Are Justified by Faith
- Ephesians 2:8-10.
- John 3:16.
- Galatians 3:26-29.
- Mark 16:15-16.
But the Bible Also Defines a Saving Faith as One that Is Active and Obedient:
- Galatians 5:6.
- Acts 10:34-35.
- James 2:14-26.
- Luke 6:46
“Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” (James 2:24)
Men often are prone to go to extremes in religion. On the subject discussed in this tract, some have contended that a person is saved by works of merit and have thereby tended to discount the grace of God in man's redemption. Others have gone to the opposite extreme by teaching about God's grace and mercy and intimating that it is not necessary for man to obey God's law's in order to be saved.
We are convinced that in Christ Jesus, the thing that truly avails is “...faith that working through love.” (Galatians 5:6). We hope and believe that you also will be persuaded that the Lord requires a working obedient faith of those who wish to go to Heaven.
May God bless you in the study of his word. You will always be welcome at our services.
